Sociology
Sociology is an academic discipline that is concerned with human social structure and behaviour. Different cultures and the societies from various periods of time are often studied in sociological texts in order to reach conclusions about various aspects of the development and continued existence of human societies.
Sociology is studied by many people across the world and in the UK it is available for young people to study as an A level subject. Many people who take sociology as an A level will go on to read the subject at university level and most universities and other institutes of higher education in the UK run a sociology department either independently or as part of a large humanities department.
Because sociology is a relatively new discipline some people do not hold it in particularly high regard, however a great deal of the findings that have arisen from this area of study are of extreme significance. There is also a great deal of debate over whether Sociology should be considered an art or science. Most people consider it a science due to the methods of empirical research and data analyses that are common to both Sociology and ‘traditional’ scientific subjects such as chemistry. Many of the methods of analysis that are utilised in sociological research and study will often be able to give people a new and interesting insight into many issues that have a profound effect on the way we live our lives. The development of popular opinions and belief are often a topic of discussion in sociology.
